6 candidates registered for by-election for Tongatapu 9

The Electoral Commission has announced today that six (6) candidates have registered for the upcoming by-election for the Tongatapu 9 constituency scheduled for next month on September 15.

Five of these candidates have recently registered and run for election last year during the November 25 elections, and they are Konisitutone Simana Kamii (Lavengatonga); Siaosi 'Enosi Tu'ipulotu (‘Alakifonua); Viliami Fukofuka (Tatakamotonga); Seventeen Toumo'ua (Haveluliku) and ‘Epeli Taufa Kalimani (Fua'amotu). The sixth candidate is newcomer Falisi Tupou.

The By-Election came whereas the seat of the Representative of the People for the Electoral Constituency of Tongatapu No. 9 has become vacant due to the death of Mr. Kaveinga Fa'anunu who won the 2010 General Election.

Tongatapu 9 constituency covers the Southeaster side of Tongatapu. It covers the villages of Tatakamotonga, ‘Alakifonua, Holonga, Pelehake, Fatumu, Haveluliku, Fu'amotu, Nakolo, Toloa, Ha'asini, Hamula and Lavengatonga.

Last year, Tongatapu 9 was one of the 17 constituencies with highest number of candidates. The other one was Tongatapu 6 who also had 15 candidates.
