Updating of the Electoral Roll for Next Year’s General Election

The Electoral Commission is currently working on updating of the electoral roll as part of its preparation for the 2014 General Election. The Commission, in collaboration with the Office responsible for the National Identity Cards has developed a registration programme to be conducted in the community for those who has turned 21 years of age and above but not yet registered. A number of registration centres have been established within each of the electoral constituencies mainly to facilitate the process and hopefully creating easier access to the public. The registration programme started on Tuesday 3rd September 2013 from the electoral constituency Tongatapu 1 and will continue until the 17 constituencies throughout the Kingdom are completed.

It is mandatory under the Electoral Act that every Tongan subject must be registered unless disqualified under Clause 64 of the Constitution. The Commission hopes to complete the 10 constituencies of Tongatapu by mid-October 2013 before continue on to Vava’u in November and the rest of the outer islands early next year.

The Commission wishes to acknowledge the assistance provides by the District and Town Officers as well as Church and Community leaders in the implementation of this programme.
